The Volvo EX30 has officially launched, with the Swedish automaker unveiling its smallest SUV in Milan earlier today. This is the brand’s second dedicated EV without an internal combustion engine option (unlike the XC40) follow EX90which premiered last November.

Volvo has not revealed the dimensions of its smallest model, but according to various sources, the EX30 measures 4,233 mm long, 1,837 mm wide and 1.55 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm.

In terms of design, the EX30 is not to be confused with a Volvo, the styling shrunk down into a smaller format. Notable markings include a digital version of Thor’s Hammer headlights, prominent wheel arch creases, a clamshell bonnet and two-piece taillights. Five exterior colors are available for the ‘small un’, including Cloud Green and Moss Yellow.

To give buyers the powertrain option to suit their needs, the automaker is offering the EX30 with three powertrain choices. The first is a single engine option of 268 hp (272 PS), powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The company says that LFP batteries are more cost-effective and less resource intensive to manufacture, meaning they are the best option if you don’t need maximum operating range. There is no mention of capacity in the Volvo release, but previous report indicates that the appliance has an energy capacity of 51 kWh.

Those who need more range can opt for the single-motor Extended Range variant, which comes with a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) extended-range battery squeezing the same 268-hp motor. The NMC battery, made up of lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt, gives the ER version a range of up to 480 km on a single charge. Again, there is no mention of the capacity of the device, but reports have claimed this to be 69 kWh.

The third option is the Twin Motor Performance variant, where the same NMC battery is paired with a second e-motor. With 422 hp (315 kW or 428 PS) to the touch, the all-wheel drive version of the EX30 is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.

In terms of charging capabilities, in addition to the built-in 11 kW charger for AC charging (with a 22 kW built-in charger available on higher versions), the standard EX30 can handle up to 134 kW in terms of fast charging, while the extended range Twin Motor variant can take up to 153 kW at DC input, meaning the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% charge in just a little over 25 minutes. Owners will be able to set the amperage, maximum charge and when to start charging through the app and the car’s central display.

Inside, the EX30 features a minimalist dashboard design with vertical vents and the elimination of the traditional toolbox. Highlights include a 12.3-inch touchscreen that provides access to all vehicle functions, while displaying key driving information such as speed, selected gear and charge level at the top. .

The infotainment system uses hardware from the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform (with 5G support), with software based on Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS), meaning Google services like Google Assistant and Google Maps navigation. iPhone users are not left out as the EX30 is the first Volvo equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay.

The EX30 also features a Harman Kardon premium sound system with novel soundbar for the speaker element of its sound system. Made up of a cluster of drivers, the soundbar is located in the top portion of the dashboard, just below the windshield. The company says that using a central soundbar reduces the amount of wiring and materials needed, and frees up storage space on the door card when removing traditional speaker components from these.

Flexible storage is a key feature of this vehicle, as can be seen from the center console, which features a sliding system so owners can choose exactly how they want to use the space. The top of the cup holder can slide out to hold drinks and/or smartphones, while the bottom compartment has a storage area for small items or a pocket with a retractable top section.

Meanwhile, rear passengers will be able to stash their phones in dedicated pockets on the backs of the front seats and there’s a storage box that slides out from under the center console. Elsewhere, drivers will be able to customize their EX30’s interior via the lighting system, with a choice of five different ambient lighting themes available. They can be paired with an ambient soundscape to set the mood even further.

Other novelties include a digital lock function, which the automaker says is compatible with multiple brands and phone models. As for the driver assistance and safety suite, highlights in the raft include a new-generation Parking Pilot Assist System, which the automaker says can handle all types of parking spaces. , including parallel, curved, perpendicular, and diagonal herringbone layouts.

There is also a special door opening safety feature alerts the driver when he is about to open the door in front of a cyclist, scooter or jogger, helping to prevent such accidents.

From the end of next year, the EX30 will also be available as a Cross Country variant. Sliding panels on the front, rear and side panels, distinctive black panels on the front bumper and trunk lid as well as the unique Cross Country branding help define this model, which comes with a host of set features. custom-made like 19-inch black wheels and optional 18-inch wheels with custom tyres.
