2022 Wells Fargo Championship Leaderboard: Keegan Bradley Overcame tough TPC Potomac in Round 3 to Take the Lead

The Wells Fargo Championship plays out like the US Open on Saturday, as only four players gathered their 60s points on a windy day at TPC Potomac. All four are now in the top 15 on the leaderboard as Round 3 average scores increased to 73.6.

Jason Day ceded the lead to Max Homa early before Homa took a step back later in the day, when Keegan Bradley took over with the 67th round. Under 3 pushed him down 8 over the week, and he has a two-stroke advantage over Day in Sunday’s final with an even bigger chase pack.

Let’s take a look back at Bradley’s round, as well as what he’ll have to do in Round 4 to hold off some longtime players and land his fifth PGA Tour win of his career.

Leader

Keegan Bradley (-8): After coming off the field with an even score of 35, Bradley went home perfectly as he shot 32 in the back with three birdies and no bogey to rise to the top of the table. Usually not considered one of the better hitters in the world, he’s been incredible in that category this week which means he’s capitalizing on one of the best weeks of his career. his own or has room to falter on Sunday as he tries to finish winning.

“Today and yesterday were really good hits and very good placement,” said Bradley. “It’s rare that we match those, and I’ve been matching it for the past two days. If I can keep that up a bit, I’d love my chance.”

I like them too, and the biggest story going into the final round is whether Bradley can make enough putts to maintain this lead. We’ve seen Day, after holding a 36-hole lead, play the first five on Saturday before going on to shoot 79. This is super easy to do under these conditions if you’re not frugal. the parser and the remote bogey. If Bradley can keep doing that, he’ll get his first win since the 2018 BMW Championship.

It’s hard to imagine a winner being anyone outside of Bradley or this group above. In fact, it would be absolutely shocking if that were the case. Homa is probably playing the best golf of anyone here – he’s the second-best dribbler in the field as of January 1 – and he’s been hitting it better than Bradley throughout the week. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s going to win, but he’s in a better position than it looks on the leaderboard.

Wolff had the firepower for days, but McIlroy had momentum after his under-68 game on Saturday, which was the second-best round of the day behind Bradley. He can certainly create something of a miracle on Sunday for his second win of the season, though he will need some help from Bradley.

“Six photos is still six shots,” says McIlroy. “It depends on what the weather is like tomorrow. I want it to be pretty tough. I know it probably won’t be that humid. It’s going to be pretty cold. I don’t know what the wind will be. I can’t imagine it. “Imagine tomorrow is harder than today. You can’t really chase much around here because it’s a tough golf course, but like six shots there’s still a long way to go.”

What is the best story?

There are some really compelling stories aside from Bradley getting his first win in four years. Homa encountering one more and getting into the actual Presidents Cup for himself (and maybe even the big championship talk) would be awesome. Anirban Lahiri winning the PGA Tour for the first time would be an unbelievable one. So does Matt Fitzpatrick. Or Cameron Young. There are plenty of former champions of the tournament in hot pursuit here, including McIlroy, Homa, Hahn, Harman and Day (though he fell short on Saturday).

Then there is Matthew Wolff, who has been wandering the desert for most of the past year and a half, struggling to find balance in his life. He said on Thursday he was just here to have fun, and I couldn’t think of anything more exciting for golf fans than him winning this trophy on Sunday afternoon.

I absolutely love Wolff’s numbers here. He’s one of the worst hitters of anyone in the top 12, and his volatility – he can shoot 64 or he can shoot 84 – works in his favor in the situation. this. If you don’t think Bradley or Homa will end it, I think he could be the one on the chase.
