World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler started the week in the rankings at 10 and increased his advantage through the first 18 holes, shooting five under on Thursday to lead the course with more strokes. Defending PGA Tour Player of the Year and defending FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay was two goals behind Scheffler for the week but now seven behind Scheffler after shooting an even 70 in his first round.
Despite the potential to turn this into a two-man race, Xander Schauffele had something to say in Round 1 about the FedEx Cup results. Starting in bottom 6, he shot a 66 to move up the leaderboard to take second place behind Scheffler. Between that duo and Cantlay were Matt Fitzpatrick and Joaquin Niemann, who shot a fitting 64s to break into the top five.
