2 Unique, Colorful Mood Board Ideas

The living room has a partition with antique dresser, table lamp, wooden chair, bed and jute rug

Today, I’m sharing some of my inspiration for a living room design update, in the form of a mood board. Mood board is an integral part of my design process. They helped me figure out how to spin the various design buttons up and down before actually making changes in a space. By creating a mood board, you can swap out different design elements and sections. This allows you to immediately understand how those swaps will affect the overall design.

Read on to see what we’ve updated in the living room so far, what happens next, and two mood boards that give you a taste of the different aesthetic I’m considering bringing to this space.

Updates on living room designs we’ve done so far

We first updated wallpapers and cut colors in this room earlier this year. I recently added a lovely antique cabinet from a local antique store, Art and architecture. This piece adds more character and capacity to the space. I also added another overhead light with the same antique shop. Finally, I changed the layout. The bed is now positioned to the left when you enter the space instead of straight forward. The current rug, bed, bedding, and other decorations were all here before or pulled from other rooms in the house.

Here’s what’s next

I wanted to continue focusing on adding more characters and balancing the softness of the backgrounds and trim colors with bolder design elements. We plan to add curtains, blinds and artwork. I want to swap out the bedding and rug and potentially update some furniture. We can also add molds and update the crown or remodel the floor (it’s in terrible shape right now).

Mood for living room design

Below you’ll see examples of the types of pieces I’m thinking of choosing for this space. These might not be the exact pieces we’re going to go with, but by pulling them together on the mood board, I was able to better understand the style and feeling I wanted to evoke in the living room. ours. The pieces that I pull out will serve as inspiration for my future purchases of this space.

This mood board direction leans more towards tradition with stronger contrasts in color and style. I love the idea of having luxuriously polished furniture with postmodern Italian bamboo mirrors, traditional printed pillows and a random geometric wool blanket spread over the top of a glamorous Hollywood Regency bed. Very happy. It’s still soft and feminine, but angular.

Mood for living room design

The direction of this mood board is a little Scandinavian and a little traditional with a bit of preparatory school. I think it’s all about pattern matching right here — being too flimsy or expecting too much proportions can tire you out. I love the idea of oversized scale graphic canvas prints with architectural lights, delicately embossed busts in frames, and marbled light bulbs, all of which bring out the focal point — a modern wooden bed.
