Zoom will soon expand end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to Zoom Phones and Breakout Rooms. The company says this will help users have seamless and secure communication over the video conferencing platform. With the expansion, users will soon have the option to upgrade to the E2EE feature during Zoom Phone calls. This will ensure that one-on-one calls are being secured with cryptographic keys, accessible only by users making or receiving calls. As part of the expansion, every Breakout Room will also soon have its own encryption key.

Video conferencing platform, Launchyes announced via its official blog that the company is expanding its E2EE feature to Zoom Phones and Breakthrough Rooms. Zoom says the E2EE feature expansion will begin rolling out soon.

Zoom Phone, the company’s cloud phone system, will soon allow users to enable E2EE during face-to-face calls. This ensures that Zoom Phone calls are secure and protected with cryptographic keys. Only users who are making or receiving Zoom Phone calls can access these passcode keys. One can verify the E2EE status by sharing the security code with other users.

In order to enable the E2EE feature for Zoom Phone, the company has emphasized several prerequisites. First, the account administrator will need to enable the E2EE feature through the Zoom web portal. Both callers will have to be on the same Zoom account and they will only be able to make individual Zoom Phone calls. Both users will have to use the Zoom Phone desktop or mobile client as PSTN is not supported. Finally, users will have to turn off automatic call recording.

Zoom Breakout Rooms is a handy feature when users want to create smaller groups for focused discussion. The company claims that it has extended the E2EE feature to Breakout Rooms without affecting the experience. Soon, each Breakout Room on Zoom will have its own encryption key to ensure safety and privacy for participants.
