Yamaha will further reduce its operations by withdrawing from the snowmobile market in the coming years. The brand has clarified that, although production of snowmobiles for all global markets including the United States will end soon, it will continue to provide parts and service for several years.
The news comes as a surprise as the Japanese company unveiled its 2024 snowmobile a few months before announcing its decision to leave the segment. Its exit plan consists of three main phases: sales in Japan will end after the 2022 model year, sales in Europe will end after the 2024 model year, and North American sales will end after the 2025 model year. More specifics are not available.
Likewise, the reasoning behind Yamaha’s decision to leave the snowmobile segment that Yamaha has competed in since 1968 is very vague. The company issued a short statement explaining only that “it will be difficult to continue to do business sustainably in the snowmobile market.” New snowmobile sales in the US and Canada still relatively stable over the past decade, but they have declined in some foreign markets largely due to the decline in the Russian market. Even so, sales of Yamaha’s snowmobiles grow up to a whopping 22% by 2020.
“In the near future, Yamaha will focus its management resources on existing businesses and new growth markets,” said a brand representative. Written in a statement. It added that it expects the exit from the snowmobile market to have a “minor” effect on its consolidated results.
The news came about four years after Yamaha leaving the auto industry, but that doesn’t mean the company will stop making cars altogether.
