Wit & Delight Monthly Theme April 2022

Create space for movement - Green April theme graphics, flowers

As we enter the long-awaited spring in Minnesota, a time when many of us have become more active and open to our lives, our April theme is all about transition motion.

Motion is physical movement, yes, but it also interrupts your phone calls. It’s taking the first step in a creative project, even if it’s very small, even if it’s as simple as putting a few words on a blank sheet of paper. Movement is to book the trip you want to take. It’s about making a small change in your routine to get yourself out of your busy schedule.

I think many of us crave the same feeling in our daily lives because translational motion can lead to the unknown. Or, we focus so much on the big, transformative outcome that the entire previous process becomes too grandiose and completely out of reach. In this rigidity, we sometimes forget that just making a small tweak and embracing our inherent flexibility can have an interesting impact.

Movement is rearranging an aspect of your life. It is doing something different from your norm. Movement is action, no matter how small.

In most cases, if something doesn’t work, you don’t need to freeze in your current state. You can choose, try and change the course if it doesn’t work. Movement is rearranging an aspect of your life. It is doing something different from your norm. Movement is action, no matter how small.

When I start a task or embark on a project in my life, I try to keep every step as light, micro, and focused as possible. Once the first step is complete, I’ll do the second step. When the second step is complete, then… you’ve got the hang of it. I also try to create space and opportunities for myself to take these small steps more easily. This includes things like tidying up my desk every night so it’s ready for me when I sit down to write in the morning.

Ultimately, the goal is to get to a place where I can keep moving forward, even on bad days, without trying too hard by doing too much or freezing and doing nothing.

As we enter April, I invite you to think about what movement means to you.

What do you want to aim for this month? What new rituals would you like to start? How do you want to make the most of the upcoming season?
