If you have money, Porsche Cayman is one of the best sports cars you can buy. They are low, fast, comfortable and absolutely easy to drive thanks to the rear-wheel drive, mid-engine layout. But even with winter tires, you wouldn’t think the Cayman would be something you want to drive fast on in the snow. That’s the purpose of your Cayenne.
And yet, the folks at FCP Euro plan to build a rallying Cayman. Before modifying it to be a better race car, they delivered their stock 2008 Porsche Cayman S to Team O’Neil for a test drive by Wyatt Knox. The goal is simple: answer the question, “Will Cayman protest?” And not to spoil the video for you, but as it turns out, yes it will.
That said, we should probably include an asterisk with that answer. You wouldn’t chase a Subaru WRX in the snow behind the wheel of a Cayman. And it will take skill to hook the tail out without turning out constantly. Most people wouldn’t be able to, but most people aren’t Wyatt Knox either.
By the time he ran on time on the track, it was clear that Cayman was not destined to top the leaderboard. But who cares? It was great fun, grinning. And Knox is really skilled at linking those corners together into a pretty and silly run. And believe it or not, it was actually faster than the all-wheel-drive Mini he tested earlier. But is it faster than a basic old Corolla? You’ll have to watch the video below to find out.
