The tight schedule for the game’s elite has forced an eclectic group to gather at the 2023 Mexican Open in Vidanta. In the second match of this tournament, world No. 1 and reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm sought to defend his title. Coming to the tournament a season ago in a mid-season run, the Spaniard took advantage of the expansive nature of not only the golf course but also the grass, to push his game forward. a new height.

Having won seven of his last 24 outings worldwide, Rahm is starting to set himself apart from the rest of the golfing world. He will win his eighth in a calendar year but needs to successfully fend off some of the players that plagued him a season ago. Tony Finau registers as the second highest ranked player in the field at world number 16.

Beating the course record in the final round in 2022, Finau narrowly caught Rahm but ended up falling one stroke behind. While he did not make it to the winner’s round, Finau and his game in Mexico proved to be a turning point not only in the season but in his entire career as he will win the title. several tournaments later that summer.

Alex Noren made the shortlist of the top 50 players in the world while the likes of Wyndham Clark, Beau Hossler, Patrick Rodgers, Nicolai Hojgaard and Maverick McNealy all sought their first PGA Tour win.

  • Jon Rahm (May 13)
  • Tony Finau (7-1): Rahm’s rise since the Mexican Open gets all the attention, but Finau’s is just as important. He arrived at Vallarta last season without ever breaking into the top 10 in 13 appearances. Finishing in second place just behind Rahm, Finau was able to collect two titles, two runners-up and two additional top five results in his last 13 starts in 2022. was the epitome of consistency in 2022-23 and while he won in the fall, he hasn’t seriously threatened the leaderboard since the new year. His iron game is hot, and he has done some damage to the paspalum with his putter before.
  • Wyndham Clark (January 16): For much of the Zurich Classic, it looks like Clark and Hossler will be the first-time winners. While it’s not for Clark, there will be a sense of confidence over the 29-year-old. He currently has three top-six finishes in his last four starts and is third in total hits in the field over the past six months, behind only Rahm and Finau. If Rahm or Finau falters, this could be the ideal landing spot for Clark’s landslide victory.
  • Gary Woodland (January 22)
  • Patrick Rodgers (January 28)
  • Nicolai Hojgaard (January 30)
  • Byeong Hun An (35-1): The former U.S. amateur champion has rediscovered his form in 2023. Connected with nine straight cuts, An is on the verge of quality consecutive games at the Texas Open and Zurich Classic. Vidanta should cater to his skill set as the 31-year-old has enough tee time and is capable of using a hot putter. He’s ranked eighth in the field for the past six months in terms of strokes from tee to green.
  • Maverick McNealy (35-1): It’s been a somewhat disappointing 2023 for the former Stanford standout. Finishing with a top 10 spot at the Sony Open in January, McNealy hasn’t been able to repeat such an effort since. His swing suffers, and while his swing is likely to keep him in the mix, it may be too much to ask, especially as to whether a confrontation with Rahm or Finau will come true or not. While he’s second in strokes over the past six months, McNealy is 73rd in strokes from tee to green.
  • Stephan Jaeger (40-1)
  • Beau Hossler (40-1)
