Wii U and 3DS eShop to close in 2023

Nintendo’s North American branch announced that it will be shutting down the 3DS and Wii U eShop at the end of March 2023. Users will not be able to make purchases or download free demos from the store. The company will also stop supporting credit card transactions and the use of Nintendo eShop Cards. It also opens the My 3DS & Wii U Memories page.

The Nintendo support site gave the following reason for the outage.

This is part of the natural life cycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time.

Before that in 2022, Nintendo End of support to pay by credit card in the Japanese eShop.

As of May 23, 2022, regions will also no longer be able to use credit cards to purchase games in the store. Furthermore, the Nintendo eShop Card will also no longer be supported as of August 29, 2022. After that, the only way to purchase the game will be to link your Nintendo Network ID wallet to your Nintendo Account. That way, players will be able to make purchases using the shared balance.

You will still be able to re-download games and DLC you already own, and download software updates, although the 3DS and Wii U eShop will be closed. Some free themes will also be available in the 3DS Theme Store after the shutdown. It also won’t affect online play. However, users who wish to purchase or download new games must do so by March 2023.

As for the Nintendo the My 3DS & Wii U Memories website, it’s dedicated to keeping track of all your 3DS and Wii U game stats. By logging into your Nintendo account through Location, players can choose to see their most played games from 2011 to 2020. The site shows a person their total time playing Wii U and the number of games played. It also provides a chart with your most played genres. The three most played titles will also be listed. As for the 3DS part, it shows your “most memorable game”.

Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop will be shutting down at the end of March 2023. Credit card support will also end on May 23, 2022, followed by Nintendo eShop Cards on August 29, 2022.
