Why would a photographer switch to full-frame from medium format
The medium format is more affordable than ever, and its resolution, tone, and dynamic range make it a landscape photographer’s dream, who almost always prioritize image quality. than anything else in the camera. So switching back to full frame from medium format seems like an odd decision. This fun video essay features an experienced landscape photographer discussing why he would consider doing it.
Coming to you from Thomas Heaton, this great video discusses why he is considering switching from medium format and back to full frame device. Without a doubt, cameras like Fujifilm GFX 100S are stunning works designed specifically for the landscape genre, but I agree with Heaton that there is a medium format issue in general with telephoto availability. I probably did the math selling all my gear and switching to the medium format five or six times, but what always stops me are my more specialized lenses (many of which is the telephoto focal length) and know that there is no close equivalent to them in the larger format. However, it really depends on your needs. Check out the video above for a full rundown from Heaton.
