Why Odell Beckham Jr. of the Rams did not sign with the Packers after being released from the Browns

The Packers were close to winning the Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes. They were considered one of the leading candidates for the veteran recipient’s service after he and the Browns family agreed to part ways.

Green Bay had one of the best NFL records (7-2) at the time Beckham signed. They also have one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks ahead of reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers and they’ve long needed a #2 receiver addition to Davante Adams.

However, the Packers were unable to sign Beckham despite being in great shape. Why? It all boils down to one thing: money.

IYER: Why OBJ Signing Won’t Repeat Antonio Brown With Bucs

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that the Packers only offered Beckham the veteran minimum ($1.075 million), plus incentives to end the season. The Rams gave Beckham a contract worth $4.25 million for the remainder of the season with a base value of $1.25 million.

That gave Los Angeles a monetary advantage. Green Bay had a chance to increase its offer, but it didn’t. That makes Beckham’s choice simple.

“He wouldn’t take the same or less money to get to Green Bay (via Los Angeles),” a source told ESPN.

THAN: Why Odell Beckham didn’t wear the number 13 shirt with Rams

Due to Green Bay’s lack of “financial dynamism”, Beckham joined a fully loaded Rams reception team, which already included Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Van Jefferson. It was a mild surprise, if only because Beckham was reportedly looking for more targets after failing to connect with Baker Mayfield.

Beckham wasn’t expected to have a big role with the Rams right away, but Woods tore his ACL one day after Beckham signed the contract. That required Beckham to stay active and play 15 tackles against the 49ers on Week 10’s “Monday Night Football” show, against whom he caught two passes for 18 yards.

Two weeks later, Sean McVay hopes to get Beckham involved “more” in the game against the Packers after a bye week.

“Odell (is) more familiar,” McVay told ESPN. “I mean for him to be able to play against the Niners is an incredible credence for him.”

THAN: The lackluster debut of Odell Beckham Jr., Rams summed up in one play

If Beckham can make some big plays on Sunday, he could show the Packers why they should give him more money during his short mid-season free agent period. he.
