Referee Scott Novak explained why Nagy was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, but did not explain exactly what Nagy said.
“I’m not going to repeat what he said,” Novak said on the Chicago Sun-Times. “But when it crosses a line and it doesn’t fit, that’s when we throw a flag.”
Novak also says it’s a difficult situation to manage, as you can’t warn the coach in advance.
“It’s hard to warn because we don’t know where the conversation is going. So if he ends up in that direction and it gets to where we need to throw a flag, we’ll throw it. “
The Bears head coach appeared to have been fired on Monday night: Late in the third round, Nagy threw a challenge flag and again let the officials have it.
The Bears will win the challenge, forcing the Vikings to defeat.
Nagy’s Bears’ tenure seems to be coming to an end sooner or later, with Chicago’s 10th loss of the season essentially cementing his “unemployed” status at some point in the coming months.
At least he’ll have these two moments to look back on.
