Which states will produce the most EV batteries in 2030?

Georgia, Kentucky and Michigan will dominate electric vehicle battery production in the United States by 2030.

Each of those three states will be able to produce between 97 and 136 gigawatt hours worth of EV batteries per year by 2030, according to the plan they have outlined.

Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee will also be major players, with a projected capacity of 46 to 97 gigawatt hours’ EV battery production per year by 2030.

This planned production capacity is highlighted by the US Department of Energy on Mondaybased on a November 2022 report from Argonne National Laboratory in November.

To keep up with the growing demand for EVs, total production capacity of EV batteries in North America will increase from 55 gigawatt hours per year in 2021 to nearly 1,000 gigawatt hours per year in 2030. So far, the planned investment in these plants is more than 40 billion USDaccording to an October report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

By 2030, this EV battery production capacity will support the production of 10 million to 13 million all-electric vehicles per year, making the United States a global EV competitor.

“A more than 15-fold increase in battery capacity by 2030 will put the United States at the forefront of the electric vehicle market,” said Nick Nigro, founder of the public policy store. Public Policy Atlastold CNBC.

“This capacity will provide more than enough batteries for the United States to meet the Biden Administration’s goal of 50 percent electric vehicle sales by 2030,” Nigro told CNBC. The Atlas work includes both transportation and climate policy.

The planned wave of EV battery plants will be close to EV assembly facilities in North America, identified by the red dots in the graphic.

“It looks like they’re trying to reduce the overall cost of production here,” David Gohlke, one of the authors of the article from Argonne, told CNBC. “They have relatively heavy batteries that need to be transported from their assembled battery site to their car assembly plant, and they need to make sure they have the infrastructure around to do that. “

Almost all of the plants planned in the Argonne report will produce lithium ion batteries and will be a joint venture between automakers and battery manufacturers such as Panasonic, Samsung, LG Chem or SK Innovation, Gohlke told CNBC.

In the future, it will be important to train workers and supply chain expansion essential minerals, Nigro told CNBC.

“The big challenge for the industry will be establishing a reliable supply chain and building the people capacity to get these factories running,” Nigro told CNBC.
