Under the deal, Moderna scientists will also have access to IBM’s generalized AI model called MoLFormer. Creative AI describes algorithms that can be used to create new content based on the data they have been trained on.
The companies say Moderna will use IBM’s model to understand “characterization of potential mRNA drugs” and design a new vaccine and therapy.
The deal comes as Moderna navigates the post-pandemic boom with its Covid mRNA vaccine.
This Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company has become a household name for messenger RNA technology, which teaches human cells to make a protein that triggers an immune response against a certain disease. .
Moderna is trying to harness that technology to target other diseases as the world emerges from the pandemic and demand for vaccines and blockbuster Covid treatments slows down.
The company is working to develop a vaccine that targets respiratory syncytial virus and one that can target different types of cancer when combined with Merck’s Keytruda immunotherapy.
The new deal also comes as IBM ramps up its investment in AI with new partnerships. Earlier this year, the company was headquartered in Armonk, New York announce an agreement with NASA to help build AI-powered models to advance climate science.
