Nominated for Best Nintendo Track – Shortlist (Long)

Dragon Root Island (The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker) – Ollie Reynolds, Screenwriter

So I narrowed my options down to three: Windmill hill are from Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Phendrana Drifts are from Metroid Primeand Dragon Root Island are from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. All three songs made me stop and sit in contemplation while I was playing each respective title, and it was really hard trying to choose a favorite out of the three, but in the end it just simply Dragon Root Island.

Dragon Roost Island is a spectacular location in The Wind Waker. Home to the great race of Rito and Valoo, it contains the first part of the game fit dungeon (I’ve personally never considered Forsaken Fortress to be a dungeon) and is the first real test of skill for our hero, Link. Such an important venue needed an outstanding piece of music to go with it, and composer Kenta Nagata really knocked it out of the park with this song.

It has become a fan favorite in the years since The Wind Waker’s release, and Nintendo has certainly noticed, going the extra mile when it comes to using the theme’s core tune for the show. Breath of the WildRito Village scores. This story will stick in my memory for the rest of my life, and it took something truly special to dethrone it.

Paula’s Theme (Earthbound) – -WC-

As the only pick from Earthbound, Paula’s Theme perfectly encapsulates the game’s eerie vibe with its ethereal synthetic tones.

Space Junk Road (Super Mario Galaxy) – Starpoint

Of all the tracks from Super Mario Galaxy, Space Junk Road is perhaps the one that represents the truly timeless beauty of outer space.

Gourmet Race 64 (Super Smash Bros.) – Manxman64

Imagine listening to this song while running; Its fast paced and rhythmic bonkers are definitely enough to boost your performance!

Music A (Tetris) – ThePizzaCheese

Arguably the most iconic track of all time, but is it the best? Hmm.

Select character (Super Mario Bros. 2) – Erigen

If you need something to put a big smile on your face during the day, we believe it’s this gem right here!

Good Egg Galaxy (Super Mario Galaxy) – Ganner

Ooof, this overarching orchestral song is definitely proof that the Galaxy is a completely different beast from its predecessor, Super Mario Sunshine.

Purpose Id (Fire Symbol: Awakening) – BranJ0

Very ‘Fire Emblem’ in his composition, Id (Purpose) brings emotions with beautiful and epic melody.

2 am (Animal Crossing) – Aozz101x

You could picture any hour of music from Animal Crossing and it would be a standout, but 2am definitely delivers those fun and refreshing vibes.

Subject Subject (Wii Sports) – Jim Norman, Screenwriter

This is not a decision to be taken lightly and I struggled between the two songs: 1) A Zelda tune that I truly believe is one of the greatest hits of all time, and 2) Wii Sports title topic. You know where I’m going with this.

No track, no motif, no theme Near the ties into my gaming past with the Wii Sports music title. This isn’t a tune to create atmosphere, build a place, or represent a particular idea, oh no, that’s what plays in the background as you argue with your brother about Should bowling or baseball in the next game – and isn’t knowing what a game is?

Funny drums! Piano riffs! That is the final clarinet statement of the central phrase! Kazumi Totaka has no right to participate in this silly sports game, but I’m glad he did. Play on the title music, you are the best.
