With new cars as expensive as they are today, being able to afford one for yourself can be a challenge on its own. Especially with the seemingly threat of layoffs dangling everyone’s head. But tight finances and a precarious employment situation have never stopped enthusiasts from dreaming about what car they would buy if they no longer had to worry about money.
Maybe you will fill your dream garage with every supercar you can own. Perhaps you will start a classic Porsche collection. Maybe you’ll pick up a custom luxury Sprinter and pay someone to drive you everywhere you want so you never have to deal with traffic again. Everyone has different dreams, and that’s okay.
But in this hypothetical situation, when you can buy 47 air-cooled Volkswagens, you can also buy nice things for other people, like a new car for your parents. Assuming they’re the type of parent you really want to give something nice, that is.
Personally, I think my parents needed a sports car. Both can drive, but as long as they live, they stay true to what’s real. Does my dad really like his 2012 Hyundai Sonata? No, he doesn’t. But Hyundai changed the engine a few years ago, so why would he discard a car with an almost brand new engine just because he wanted something more comfortable with a zero-trash transmission? Although a few years ago, they were a bit extravagant and bought a 2015 Lexus CT 200 hours.
But at the same time, if I give them a Bugatti Chiron and pay for the maintenance, I don’t think they’ll really like it. Even a new Corvette would be too noisy and inconvenient for them. But the Nissan Z? That sounds like a car they love. Can you find better cars for the money? Maybe. But they appreciate the styling and it has a Nissan badging on the hood so it’s not too fussy or ostentatious. It would just be a fun car that they could even drive every day if they wanted to.
