Some special edition cars are really special. From low-volume production models that offer extra features that regular models don’t, to limited-run performance models, if it’s successful enough, it often becomes something someone will hold. More often than not, though, an automaker might call it a special edition that will make you question who this package is for and why they bother doing it.
Lincoln once made such a move. Back in the mid-’90s, the Town Car was one of the brand’s best sellers. It attracts older affluent buyers who are known to prefer American-style luxury boats. They decided to take the Town Car to the next level, by offering Jack Nicklaus’ Signature Line (yes, pro golfer.)
Lincoln has been a sponsor of PGA Golf tournaments since the early ’80s, and considering that many of Lincoln’s customers may be golf enthusiasts, the luxury brand’s partnership with one of the golfers The greatest of all time is logical. It’s just that the finished product is not really worthy of a golf legend.
Available as a special edition option package on the 1992 Town Cars, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Series gives you the choice between a deep green transparent finish or an arctic white transparent finish. Some dealers have equipped them with aftermarket vinyl landau roofs because of course they did. The distinctive exterior badge reads “Golden Bear” – Nicklaus’ nickname – on each fender as well as the rear deck and dash. Inside, white leather seats accented by green pipe, together with carpet and rug in dark green with the word Gold cowear badges.
And tits hat. No free PGA tickets, no special edition golf clubs or anything. Just a lot of green for green, Maybe? Considering I’ve never seen one in real life, I don’t think many people want to drive a Town Car with green carpet golf and Jack Nicklaus’s name is pasted all on it.
