Westminster Dog Show 2023: Top Moments, Winners From Monday


2023 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is in full swing!

Westminster, also known as the “America’s Dog Show,” is the second-longest running sporting event in U.S. history after the Kentucky Derby, and this year’s event, back for its 147th, lasted for four day.

Monday’s competition focused on judging the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups, with the top dog in each respective group selected to advance to the Best in the Program rating. Tuesday’s competition will move to judging for the Sports, Labor and Terrier Teams to complete the Best in Show judging field later that evening.

Hosted by the American Kennel Club, the beloved spectacle brings together thousands of exceptional dogs, divided into seven categories for judging, competing for the coveted Best in Show title.

The Westminster Kennel Club welcomes the Bracco Italiano to this year’s show. This is an ancient pointer breed originating from northern Italy, recently recognized by the AKC, eligible to compete in Westminster. History will be made on Tuesday when the Best of Breed winner will hit the green carpet in the Sports Team competition.

More than 3,000 dogs from 210 different breeds from 49 states and 13 countries competed this year.

It’s all happening in Queens, New York at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which is hosting the event for the first time, and FOX Sports’ Jenny Taft And Little Jamie there to take you behind the scenes in the middle of all the action.

Here are the top moments from Monday’s competition!

Group of Hounds (Winner: Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen)

The Hound, whose common ancestor was used for hunting, first appeared in Westminster. The competition was stiff, but it was Buddy Holly the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, or PBGV, who claimed the first win of the night.

The Afghan Hound is second in this group, followed by the Borzoi in third and the English Foxhound in fourth.

Toys Team (Winner: Pekingese)

Toy dogs, which are affectionate, sociable and adaptable to a variety of lifestyles, are next at Westminster.

After another tough round, Rummie the Pekingese won the second group title of the evening. It’s another huge win for this unmistakable toy breed, as a Pekingese cat named Wasabi won Best in Show in 2021.

Shih Tzu is second in this group, followed by Britain’s Toy Spaniel in third and Japan’s Chin in fourth.

Non-Sporting Group (Winner: French Bulldog)

Non-athletic dogs, a diverse group of breeds with varying sizes, coats, personalities and overall looks, were the third group to appear on Monday.

The fan-favorite Winston the French Bulldog, the reserve Best in Show (or runner-up) at Westminster in 2022, has swept the group yet again this year.

The Standard Poodle came in second, followed by Bulldog and Bichon Frisé in third and fourth, respectively.

Herding Group (Winner: Australian Shepherd)

Herding dogs – which are extremely intelligent and share the instinctive ability to control the movements of other animals, as they were developed for gathering, herding and guarding livestock – are the last group. same review on Monday.

The Australian Ribbon Shepherd came out on top, beating 32 other breeds to take the top title. Bouviers des Flandres finished second in this group, followed by the Shetland Sheepdog in third and the German Shepherd in fourth.
