Weekend Preview: Emanuel Navarrete-Eduardo Baez; Omar Figueroa-Sergey Lipinets
By: Sean Crose
WBO featherweight Emanuel Navarrete will defend his crown Saturday night in San Diego at Pechanga Arena when he faces Eduardo Baez in a scheduled 12-round match. Navarette, who goes by the nickname “Vaquero” is the star here, as he is a Top Rated signature draw with a 35-1 record and 29 kills. However, Eduardo only won against Enrique Vivas in March last year. With only 7 kills found on his 21-2-2 resume, the boxer known as “”El Gemelo”, is not a powerful puncher, however, boxing is not. nothing if not a sport of shuffling, so it can be interesting to see how it plays out.
The Navarrete-Baez Card will air live on ESPN starting at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday.
Across the area at Showtime there was another card that aired on Saturday night, one that allegedly featured Adrien Broner, although the list of many controversial subjects dropped out of the fight because of emotional issues. This certainly did not satisfy his scheduled rival, Omar Figueroa, although a very solid replacement was introduced. Short story: Sergey Lipinets was supposed to be on Saturday’s card. Now he’s in the main event.
Boasting a 28-2-1 record, Figueroa is said to be looking to re-establish itself after beating two goals in a row, against Abel Ramos and Yordenis Ugas. He has some notable names in his winning column, including Robert Guerrero and Ricky Burns. Needless to say, 16-2-1Lipinets would have been another notable win – provided Figueroa might be the best fit for him. Lipinet’s only loss belonged to Mikey Garcia and Jaron Ennis – two big names.
Figueroa-Lipinet’s card will be broadcast live on Saturday Showtime starting at 8pm Eastern Time.
