Wartales is the next game from the makers Northgardand it’s launching early access in just a few days on December 1st. We’ll have a full review of the early access version on the site soon, but We’ve loved what we’ve played about it so far. In case you missed our earlier coverage, Wartales is an open-world tactical RPG that sees you control a group of mercenaries making their way through a plague-ridden medieval world. Your goal is to survive by feeding and paying your band, and when we talked to the developers about it, they say you’ll have a lot of freedom in how you do it. This isn’t a game that gets you bogged down in tedious side quests, and you can “play pretty much any way you want,” game director Nicolas Cannasse told us. “You can explore, fight bandits, or become bandits yourself.”
Nate (RPS in Peace) also loved the low-fantasy setting when he played its pre-build in August: “For me, low-fantasy delivers all the gritty fun of period history. medieval, without being weighed down by any need to reflect actual events of the past,” he wrote. “It’s a spinoff that’s particularly well-suited to stories of murky people doing murky things, and people aren’t more heinous than mercenaries.”
If that sounds like your medieval cup of casserole, Wartales will be available for free to paid RPS subscribers on the same day it launches, Wednesday, December 1.
We’ll be announcing this key drop again in advance because, like the Darkest Dungeon giveaway, it’s a smaller-than-usual key drop. Codes will only be available in limited quantities and we want to make sure everyone has an equal chance to grab one to avoid disappointment.
