WARNO is the spiritual successor to the Wargame RTS . series

I’ve had a lot of fun with Wargame’s series of real-time strategy games, although after a certain point I couldn’t tell the difference between its dozen or so historic tanks. Now, the Eugen Systems developers are creating a spiritual successor called WARNO, which will be available on Steam Early Access next month.

Here’s the announcement trailer, setting the ’80s setting and love of helicopters and tanks:

WARNO, which stands for “Warning Order,” actually sounds like Wargame given the coined name. It is a hot alternate history of the Cold War, in which NATO and Warsaw Pact nations fought with conventional weapons on lush, wooded battlefields and towns. Your arsenal includes well-researched real vehicles, whose purpose is to depict how a World War 3 scenario could have actually played out except for nuclear weapons.

Eugen’s strategy games – including the Steel Division and RUSE series – rarely have much plot. Instead, their quests tend to function as teamfights, which can be played alone, competitively, or in co-op. In WARNO there will be, like in the Wargame series, a campaign mode that places battles within the context of a larger turn-based strategy map.

However, at launch in early access on January 20th, only solo and online skirmishes and 10v10 battles will be available, with other modes coming later. You can get more screenshots and details on the WARNO Steam page The current.
