VW’s Electrify America joins the industry, using Tesla chargers
Ford, common engine, RivianVolvo, pole star and potentially Stellantis And hyundai is set to support Tesla’s charging plug, also known as the North American Charging Standard, in the coming years. Public charging station operators have responded similarly, as everyone from ChargePoint to EVgo to Blink and now Volkswagen’s Electrify America have signed on to add NACS in addition to CCS, the current standard for vehicles convenience not Tesla. It can be argued that in just a few short weeks, Tesla’s has become the reality of America standard.
Electrify America confirmed today’s news in a Press Releasequoted below:
Electrify America will continue to offer the Combined Charging System (CCS-1) connector across its network as it moves to support automakers adding NACS charging ports. The company will work to make the NACS connector option available at current and future charging stations by 2025 to make charging as convenient as possible for electric vehicle owners.
“Since inception, we have focused on building a comprehensive and open superfast charging network to facilitate electric vehicle use. “We look forward to continuing to support industry-wide standards that increase vehicle interoperability and streamline public charging.”
This confirmation matches Reuters reports that Volkswagen, the second-largest automaker globally, is currently in talks with Tesla to implement NACS support in its cars. It’s unclear how Volkswagen’s transition will unfold, but if like its peers, it will offer a CCS to NACS converter in the near future before fully transitioning to the built-in NACS starting in 2025.
Complaints about the reliability and user experience of most public charging platforms, with the exception of Tesla, are not uncommon, and Electrify America’s hardware is a notable violator. The company’s charger ranks second to last just behind EVgo in terms of satisfaction with DC fast charging in one JD Power Survey 2022and contributors to this site have had their own difficulties with it in the past also. A few brand terminals even fixed three EVs since springincluding a Chevy Bolt left in its entirety.
Of course, switching to Tesla’s plug won’t solve those problems for Electrify America, but Volkswagen’s overall vote of confidence is the last sign anyone needs that NACS has definitely won. win.
