Volkswagen has revealed the ID.7 as the name of the next model in its ID line of electric vehicles, and this week at CES in Las Vegas, it will show off a prototype of the ID.7’s “digital camouflage” before the launch. production revealed later this year.
Based on ID.Aero concept car which VW has confirmed is for the US market, the ID.7 is a full-size sedan with a coupe-like tapered hood and emphasis on aerodynamics. At 194.5 inches long, it’s about the length of a Tesla Model S and built on a 116.9-inch long wheelbase. But at 60.2 inches tall, it’s a bit taller than most other sedans available, electric or not — to fit in a spacious cabin above the battery pack.
Volkswagen has not released information on the technical specifications of the ID.7 concept, but it is built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform that underpins the concept. ID.4 as well as several other models offered in China and Europe.

In the Aero, it can be in the form of the longest wheelbase — just like the upcoming version ID.Buzz—provides a battery pack with approximately 90 kWh of usable energy, promising “range of operation up to approximately 700 km.” It was in the European WLTP cycle; VW is not yet ready to suggest what will amount to an EPA cycle, but we suspect it will mean in the vicinity of 350 miles in at least one version. VW hasn’t even confirmed the drive configuration yet, though we’d expect both rear- and dual-motor versions.
While this special edition for CES may closely resemble the production car, it can actually be a bit difficult to see some of the ID.7’s close-up contour details in the right light. Beyond the hooded interior, VW previews what appears to be an interface upgrade not too far inside the ID.7. A “new screen concept” elevates the touchscreen to 15.0 inches, offers illuminated touch slides, and adds an augmented reality display. The air-conditioning controls are now integrated into the top level of the infotainment interface, and the intelligent ventilation system can preheat or cool the vehicle, detecting when the driver is approaching.
