Volvo almost ready to introduce the next generation of XC90, its flagship model, but it doesn’t forget about the other end of its range. Supposedly there are plans to launch an entry-level model that will come in the form of a pocket sized model intersection powered by an electric drive system.
Do not cite sources, British magazines Autocar reports that the model will ride on a modular platform developed by parent company Volvo Geely and is called SEA internally. This architecture was the foundation 001 sold by Zeekr, is another brand in the Geely empire. No technical specifications are available yet, but the report outlines the lines of a sleek premium car.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Volvo’s city-friendly SUV; earlier rumor claims that it will be called either the XC20 or the C20, names that clearly signal the model’s location is below the 40-marked cars. Volvo moving However, from this naming system, and the cars it will launch in the coming years will receive the actual name. As mentioned, both the XC20 and C20 names are undisputed.
Polestar’s take over the concept of an electric entry-level crossover that will be positioned between the 2 and the 3, in spite of it would be somewhat confusing called 4. It looks like this model will be bigger and more expensive than Volvo’s, and Autocar learned that it may be closely related to Recharge C40 (pictured) below the metal plate. If that’s correct, it shares its CMA architecture with 2, among other models, and it will be offered with a single electric motor driving the front wheels or a dual-motor all-wheel drive.
Both of these electric vehicles will have at least one thing in common: the quest to drive sales. For Volvo, the launch of a battery-powered car pegged near the bottom of its range would increase the percentage of electric vehicles in its global sales mix. It plans to pass the 50% mark by 2025. For Polestar, breaking into cheaper segments will allow it to increase sales year-to-year by reaching less affluent buyers, though it will still is a premium brand.
Polestar 4 is expected to launch in 2023. There’s no word on when Volvo will release its smallest EV so far.
