Yesterday, Vietnamese car manufacturer Vinfast announced its plan to produce electric vehicles in North Carolina starting in 2024. With an investment of $2 billion for the first phase of construction, these plans will have the capacity to produce 150,000 vehicles per year and create thousands of jobs.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is running efficiently double the number of mail trucks— the latest development in a year-long TV series in which the USPS last year announced that electric vehicles represent only 10% of new contracts to renew fleets. The first truck of the next generation will begin to be used on the roads in 2023.
As former Tesla CTO JB Straubel’s Redwood Materials works to assemble supply chain recovery and recycling parts for EV battery packs, he suggests that EV batteries will last about 15 years. Straubel notes that the company’s runway to get its processes in place has shortened current supply chain insecurities — and it expects to now do raw materials deals with auto manufacturers, not just call or cathode suppliers.
