Very Serious Consequences of Climate Change – Sadiq Khan – Interested in that?

It appears that Sadiq Khan sent this extremely irresponsible and misleading warning to his citizens – (my bold):

There is no evidence that the heatwave is a “consequence” of climate change. It is a weather event, one that is the direct result of a set of extremely rare meteorological conditions.

The clue to this lies in the fact that weather models ran a few days ago, showing that the possibility of temperatures reaching 40C is very unlikely. Weather models are run over and over again thousands of times, to provide a range of different results around very small changes to assumptions. In other words, the meteorological system that we may be facing was considered an extreme externality just a few days ago.

Even accepting that average UK summer temperatures have risen by more than half a degree since the 1940s, the next heatwave will still be a century ago, albeit half a degree lower. . Of course, in those days, Londoners were much less prepared for hot weather.

Labeling it as “potentially dangerous” is also an irresponsible scare, as millions of Britons fly to Spain and other countries, where temperatures are frequently much higher.

Of course, people need to take reasonable precautions, but they don’t need the Mayor to teach them.

While Khan is playing the political game with climate change, I will ask if he ever issues red warnings every winter when it gets cold. Surely he knows that many more people die in the cold of winter?

And summer mortality rates are always the lowest of any season, heatwave or not.

Surely he would welcome a slightly warmer climate?

The Met Office issued the first Red Alert, which spans most of central England:

Forecasts for towns such as Manchester and Leeds, included by the warning, suggest temperatures could reach around 36°C.

However, a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius is certainly not unprecedented in the Southeast, but has never been accompanied by a Red Warning?

Does the Met Office also play a political role?
