Marelux underwater photo case TTL converter for Canon

Underwater Technics shares information on latest TTL circuit specially developed for Marelux underwater housing for Canon cameras

Underwater photographers vary Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, Distance and other parameters in a wide range, but the TTL flash control system immediately provides automatic intensity adjustment. flash light for each shot. It allows photographers to focus their attention on the creative side of underwater photography. The TTL converter is the heart of the automatic flash control system.

The #11080-HSS TTL converter was created by Underwater Technics Co. Ltd. (Taiwan) with the cooperation and support of Marelux Precision Inc. (USA). This unit, designed to be installed in the Marelux underwater housing, provides automatic and manual flash exposure control for popular underwater flash types: Inon, Sea&Sea, Retra, Ikelite and Subtronics.

Marelux factory is currently producing the following underwater cases for Canon: MX-R5, MX-R5C and MX-R6 with case line for Canon to be expanded in 2023. TTL #11080-HSS converter is specially designed for installation in all Marelux for Canon cases, independent of camera model. The product was developed by Underwater Technics in 2022 and field tested with the Marelux MX-R5 case.

Easy user settings

This unit is a universal TTL board and it can be installed by the user in any Marelux case for Canon. The user installation is very easy and takes 2 minutes. Just screw 2 bolts through the plastic frame and the product is ready to use.

Combination TTL circuit

Product #11080-HSS is a combo circuit, consisting of optical TTL and electrical TTL systems on a single board with both triggering methods available separately or simultaneously. Fiber optic connections are supported as well as electrical sync wire connections. Dual fiber optic supported with powerful LED optical TTL output. Dual sync wires (Sea&Sea and Ikelite) are supported for electrical TTL output.

Underwater Technics also supports the M14 electric baffle manufactured in Nikonos, Ikelite and S-6 styles, compatible with Marelux housings. In addition, adapters for M16 and M24 threads are available, so the electrical baffle can be installed even into the M24 screw hole (for the HDMI connector on the case).

So Marelux users are more likely to build their own TTL system in the camera housing. System configuration is very flexible.

The TTL converter supports the most popular underwater wardrobes:

  • Inon Z-330, Z-240;
  • Retra Pro (including HSS function);
  • Sea&Sea YS-D1, YS-D2, YS-D3MkII (from December 2022), YS-250;
  • Ikelite DS-162, DS-161, DS-160, DS-125;
  • Subtronic Pro-270, Pro-160, etc

Blink type can be set using the onboard rotary switch.

High-speed sync (HSS)

Underwater closet maker RETRA, in addition to the classic TTL and M modes, offers an interesting option, – HSS sync, which is a special flash operation available even at high speeds. ultra-fast shutter (speed available – up to 1/8000 sec).

In HSS synchronization, illumination occurs during a particular moment, and with a very long series of short flashes of 30 kHz, it operates throughout the duration while a narrow opening shutter range moves. along the frame. Flash intensity is adjusted by varying the duty cycle of the pulses. Here is a comparison between regular flash and HSS flash:

Underwater Technics TTL converters support Retra HSS using a specially developed firmware HSS module. Users can switch to HSS sync via the Canon camera menu for external flash, as this Canon graphic menu control feature is fully supported by TTL Converter.

Automatic ON/OFF switch

The Underwater Technics #11080-HSS TTL converter does not need an ON/OFF mechanical switch. The device automatically activates immediately when the user presses the camera’s shutter-release button or touches any other camera control. It also automatically turns OFF a few seconds later by camera command, if the camera is idle for a while. This automatic power control saves battery life and greatly increases product reliability and usability. It has extremely low current consumption in standby mode and extremely long battery life (approximately 3 years in standby mode or 65 000 flashes). The battery is a small CR2032 battery (2 pcs.).

Full Canon menu support for external flash control

Canon menu for external flash control is fully supported by TTL Converter. UW Technics has developed special firmware for advanced communication with Canon camera menus. The camera sends menu settings to the TTL Converter and receives commands from it, then loads the necessary data into the camera. Therefore, there is a two-way data transmission protocol. This UW Technics TTL product adds the ability to work with the camera menu because information about flash control settings is stored in the TTL Converter’s built-in permanent memory, even after the power is turned off. This is a super convenient feature for users.

Using the Canon camera menu, photographers can underwater convert the following settings, supported by the TTL Converter firmware: TTL or M mode, 1/2 curtain or HSS sync, +/- Flash exposure compensation, manually adjustable flash intensity (in M mode) within 1/128….1/1, Rating or Average TTL metering for flash, flash ON/OFF and other Others.
