USGA awards 2034, 2051 US Open golf events to Oakland Hills Country Club after fire destroys clubhouse

The USGA continues to fulfill its organizing mission for future US Open events, and the historic Oakland Hills Country Club in suburban Detroit, Michigan, is the latest recipient. This is nothing new for Oakland Hills, which has previously hosted six US Opens, three PGA Championships and one Ryder Cup. But in the face of a fire that recently consumed its clubhouse, it’s a nice payback for what’s been a rough year. The US Open will take place in Oakland Hills in 2034 and 2051.

Gil Hanse recently restored the Oakland Hills and helped bring it back to a more modern version of its original design. As Adam Schupak recently pointed out, this was done with the aim of securing his first major championship since Padraig Harrington won the 2008 PGA Championship against Ben Curtis and Sergio Garcia. Hanse also restored this year’s PGA Championship venue – Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

… it’s one of the worst kept secrets in golf that this latest renovation has been greenlit with the goal of winning a seventh US Open championship and with ambitions to become a success. USGA Midwest rota pick for years to come.

If the USGA’s announcement is any indication, it looks like the task Hanse set out to accomplish hit the mark. The USGA throws Oakland Hills – which has not had a US Open since 1996 when Steve Jones beat Tom Lehman and Davis Love III – into a rotation that now includes giants like Pinehurst No. 2, Oakmont, Pebble Beach and Shinnecock.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring two more US Opens to an iconic location like Oakland Hills,” USGA championships executive director John Bodenhamer said in a statement. “Since the first US Open in 1924, Oakland Hills has provided a supreme test of the best game, and it will continue to do so in the years to come.”

The before and after pictures of the Hanse restoration are stunning.

On the other hand, the photos of recent fire $80 million demolished the almost 100 year old clubhouse and everything it sits in is equally stunning. According to a reportOakland Hills is planning to rebuild a similar clubhouse, but the damage to the club and its history has been immense.
