Used Jaguar I-Pace batteries to power Formula E

Jaguar is using replacement batteries from its I-Pace electric SUVs to power its Formula E racing program.

The I-Pace is used as the foundation for the Off Grid Energy Storage System (ESS) developed by the Pramac portable generator company. Charged by solar panels, it uses cells from one-and-a-half-block I-Pace battery packs to provide portable power in places where grid power may not be available — like the Formula E paddock .

According to the company’s press release, Jaguar’s Formula E team used the ESS during pre-season testing in the UK and Spain. According to Jaguar, the batteries provide diagnostic equipment for racing cars and provide auxiliary power to the team garage.

Jaguar says the Formula E team’s further use of portable energy storage is under consideration. Formula E uses temporary street circuits, so there is no permanent garage with grid-connected power for crews to use. So it seems like a good use case.

The “top” version of the Pramac system has a capacity of 125 kWh, with the ability to charge 22 kw AC for electric vehicles, Jaguar notes.

I-Pace itself slow to start selling in the United States than was expected. It has been updated with a new look and faster charging back in 2020—But those improvements were held for the United States until the 2022 model year.

I-Pace’s Delay and Range Inconsistency has been our main problem with this model in early experiences and we hope to follow up with this model soon.

Jaguar at least offers an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty that guarantees 70% state of charge. That predicted battery degradation limit proposed by California. When the battery pack is no longer usable for automotive or energy storage applications, Jaguar claims it is 95% recyclable.

Upcoming Jaguar EVs will be built on new, ‘reservation’ platform called Panthera. This is intended to give Jaguar a unique design language and marks a departure from the canceled electric XJ sedan.
