US Open 2022 wallet, prize money: Bonuses for Matt Fitzpatrick, each golfer from record record $17.5 million
Money talks – as always in the world of golf – and the USGA had a lot of work to do this week when CEO Mike Whan announced Wednesday a significant increase in US Open wallets 2022. Up $5 million per year from last year, the US Open will pay out $17.5 million to weekend performers. That’s officially the largest sum in major championship history.
Capitalizing on those skyrocketing sums was Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the US Open championship with a single hit against Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler. In doing so, Fitzpatrick asked for the winner’s share of $3.15 million, nearly $500,000 more than masters and the PGA Championship awarded champions Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas ($2.7 million) respectively as part of their $15 million.
US Open 2021 champion Jon Rahm brought in $2.25 million, so that’s a year-over-year increase over the USGA of $900,000. However, first place is not the biggest prize this year as Cameron Smith took home a record $3.6 million for his win at The Players Championship in March.
Not only is the increase in US Open prize money good news for national championship contenders, but even those who finish in the top 20 are receiving a significant amount of money. All of the top 20 finishers are receiving $200,000 for their troubles facing the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
