CBP said the $56,000 shipment from China on October 2 appeared to be a “gravity pipe,” CBP said in a statement Wednesday.
CBP’s import experts “confirm that the bubble glass violates U.S. law on the importation of injecting drug paraphernalia,” the statement said.
The balloons were directed to an address in Los Angeles County, California.
CBP officers check international passengers and cargo for “illegal drugs, unreported currency, weapons, counterfeit consumer goods, prohibited agriculture, and other illicit products that may contain could harm the American public, American businesses, and the safety and vitality of our nation,” the statement said.
In a statement released last week, CBP seized $23,000 in currency from a couple on a flight to Ghana. The couple said they only had $10,500.
“While examining the couple’s handbag, officers discovered an envelope hidden behind the zippered lining of the carry-on bag. Officers verified the couple’s combined sums were $23,641. as humanitarian relief,” the statement said.
According to CBP, federal law requires travelers to declare all currency with a value of $10,000 or more.
