UK Superbike support class starts for 2024

BSB 2024

British Superbike Championship series organizers MSVR announced overnight the full list of support classes that will appear from 2024, following what they say has carefully reviewed the specifications to ensure class stability, while continuing to deliver close and competitive races throughout the show.

During the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, Promoters and teams will review technical (firmware) changes and identify areas of performance and cost control. There is also a BSB “Roadmap” technical qualification consideration for teams moving from the National Super League, only for the first year of BSB competition. This will include the use of the MoTeC ECU platform but some lower regulatory requirements for certain mechanical parts and cycles.

The BSB also revealed the introduction of two new classes for 2024, designed to showcase and promote young riders, providing a career path that allows for growth and advancement through the championship classes.

New for 2024

Pirelli . National Sports Motorcycle Championship

New for the 2024 season, qualifying machines include the Yamaha R7, Aprilia RS660, Kawasaki Ninja 650, Honda Hornet 750 as well as others that are expected to enter the field. The machine will run on the Mektronic ECU platform with the BoP formula to manage the model parity and slippery tyres. Eligibility for riders is a minimum age of 16 as of March 1, 2024.

Kawasaki UK Superteen Championship

The all-new one-off series, the British Kawasaki Superbike Championship, will launch in 2024. The series will be part of the 2024 British Bennetts Superbike Championship calendar, giving young riders the chance to race against huge crowds at the UK’s best circuits.

The new Kawasaki British Superteen will be open to riders between the ages of 15 and 20 and will run through eight doubles, at the UK’s top laps, including the planned World Superbike support race. With racers on equal footing, this series will be a thrilling spectacle for race fans, while the high rpm characteristics of the 400cc 4-cylinder Supersport machine are perfect to help young racers develop their skills as part of the world’s most competitive domestic series. The overall winner of the 2024 Superteen Championship will receive a brand new Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R road bike.

Each competitive race car in the series will be built by Team Kawasaki’s Green Engineering Partner, MSS Performance, who will also offer two package options to suit every budget. With the aim of making this a fair and competitive option for racing, all-inclusive prices will start at under £12,000 plus VAT.

The series officially debuted today at Brands Hatch, with the UK’s first Ninja ZX-4RR, built to track specifications, available to watch in Pit Lane throughout the weekend. Members of staff from Kawasaki UK and MSS Performance will also be available all weekend for any riders and teams looking to take part in the Championship next season.

Ross Burridge – Head of Marketing & Racing at Kawasaki UK

As soon as we saw this model in production, we knew it was for the track! Having the BSB Championship promoter MSVR on board and allowing us to have a class entirely devoted to this bike is amazing! We are delighted to be able to offer an exciting and competitively priced racing package to young riders looking to advance their racing career. Team Green has always been to support young talent and create opportunities in the right direction, so we can’t wait to go one step further with this new class in 2024..”

Stuart Higgs – Director of the BSB . series

It’s been 32 years since British circuit promoters launched the first “Superteen” Championship, and the list of participants includes James Haydon, David Jefferies, John McGuiness and Michael Rutter. We are extremely pleased to bring the name “Superteen” back to the status of the British Championship. Together with our partner Kawasaki UK, we are recalibrating this most important entry-level segment with a new motorcycle that will benefit the development of the team and riders, and importantly, fit within tight budget and regulatory specifications. Any major changes to the championship structure are carefully considered and current Junior Supersport machines will qualify for a variety of regional and national club championships..”

Changes to existing support categories

British Supersport Championship Quattro

By 2025, the class will fully adopt Supersport’s “Next Generation” specifications, with the expected launch of further eligible models. The use of electronic “sets” will cease at the end of the 2024 season. This year’s Pirelli Junior Superstock Championship will also be the path to the BSS Cup in 2024.

Quattro . Group GP2 Championship

There will be a further assessment for the remainder of the 2023 season to determine viability for 2024 and beyond. Promoters recognize the benefits of the mid-prototype class, but subsequent teams’ commitment to this class is a priority to confirm.

Pirelli . National Supercar Championship

Series organizers are continuing to review specifications to balance models as needed. There will also be a review of tire material standards.

Pirelli National Junior Superstock Championship

The Pirelli National Junior Superstock Championship will not resume in 2024 as the category is limited to two manufacturers without a realistic selection of more and without the ability to operate a balance of performance (BoP) formula, as in the BSS. Existing machines/teams can switch to the BSS Cup (or Main BSS Championship). All national and regional clubs will maintain the 600cc class.

R&G Talent Cup

Despite many other Dorna-promoted Talent Championships switching to Pirelli tyres, BTC is still contractually powered from Dunlop tyres.

HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship

The Junior Supersport class will not resume in 2024 – as already a production series, the Organizer has identified with Kawasaki UK an alternative machine that runs on tight specs and finances. All national and regional clubs will maintain a class that caters to current Junior Supersport machines.

Combined machine and rider weights will be deployed immediately (2023).
