Ubisoft Quartz NFT Trailer Has 96% Dislikes

Yesterday, Ubisoft announced its intention to bring the first NFTs for their game in the form of three cosmetic items for Ghost Recon Break Point. As part of the announcement, they produced a 79-second trailer describing how the system, dubbed “Ubisoft Quartz”, will work.

After about 24 hours, the video had 200,000 views, more than 1300 likes, and more than 35,000 dislikes.

Here is the video:

Although YouTube recently removed the ability to see how many dislikes a video has, the dislike button still exists and there are Chrome plugins that allow you to restore the counter. At the time of writing, 96% of people who watch a video in one way or another don’t like it.

This is cheering me up personally for many of the reasons I’ve listed in yesterday’s post (and in the comments afterwards). NFTs are stupid, whether it’s because they’re bad for the environment or simply bad for the game. In this case, they are used to deliver three generic cosmetic items, each of which is just “unique” in the sense that it has an “engraved ID”.

While the CEO of every publisher is talking about NFTs and cryptocurrencies and “playing for money”, and while investors are clearly interested in the technology, there has never been any equal. There’s no proof that the game players want it. Instead, here’s some evidence that they don’t.

The Ghost Recon community on Reddit has likewise was agreed in their criticism of Quartz. Ghost Recon players have long been frustrated with Ubisoft’s management of the series, including this year Ghost Recon Frontline’s notifications (and near-instant latency).

Correction: This story originally stated that the video was removed following negative feedback. This is incorrect; it is always delisted. Sorry for the error.
