Tuscan youngster first win for Louisiana Sire Sassicaia
Young Tuscans Be the first winner for the Louisiana stallion Sassicaia January 8th when 3-year-old gelding entered his first race, one claimed his first $12,500, at Fair Grounds & Slots.
The young Tuscan took the lead under Charlie Marquez and, after splitting into: 22.36 and :46.78, pulling away 3 1/2 lengths at the end, the clock stopped at 1:06 ,17 for 5 1/2 ropes. The Elite Thoroughbred Racing-owned racer, coached by Lee Thomas, scored his first win in seven starts and boosted his earnings to $10,140.
Raised in Louisiana by Royal Kraft Sr., Young Tuscan became the fifth winner from 11 ponies generated from his dam, Maria’s Mon mare Broadway’s Maria .
Sassicaia, an 11-year-old son of Bernardini who stood at Michele Rodriguez’s Elite Thoroughbreds in Louisiana for an advertising fee of $2,000, won the Toboggan Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct race track in 2016 for owner Bob LaPenta and trainer Rudy Rodriguez. The boy was bought by blood agent Steve Young for $1.6 million in 2013 at The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton’s select 2-year-olds in a training sale in Florida. He compiled a 4-6-2 record from 20 starts and made $307,127.
Bred in Kentucky by Masaichiro Abe, Sassicaia lies outside forestry mare Hishi Aspen . 1st place winner Northern Aspen is his third dam, and his blue mare, Fall Aspen, is his fourth.
Young Tuscan is the sole starter of Sassicaia from 23 ponies.
