The Supreme Court late Wednesday afternoon dismissed a request of former president Donald Trump to block White House records from being sent to a House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots.

The ruling, which Trump cannot appeal, sets the stage for more than 700 pages of Trump’s White House files that will soon be sent to a selection committee by the National Archives.

Trump at the end of 2021 lost the effort in the federal district of Washington, DC and appeal to the court to block the panel from obtaining those documents.

He has unsuccessfully argued in those courts that he has authority as a former president to claim executive privilege to prevent the disclosure of records, and has invoked that argument. in a petition to the Supreme Court to handle the case.

chairperson Joe Biden denied the request for executive privileges for the records, which the commission wanted as part of its investigation into the events taking place, during and after the January 6 invasion of the complex. Capitol by a crowd of Trump supporters.

In Wednesday’s decision, the Supreme Court said questions about whether and when a former president can get a court order blocking the release of the records even though a sitting president said they could could be released “unprecedented and raises serious and substantial concerns.”

But the high court noted that the DC Circuit Court of Appeals did not address those questions “because it analyzed and refuted President Trump’s claims of privilege” under any examination. [he] donate. ‘”

“Because the Court of Appeals concluded that President Trump’s claims would fail even if he were incumbent, his status as a former President necessarily makes no difference.” to the court’s decision,” the Supreme Court said.

Of the nine Supreme Court justices, only Judge Clarence Thomas will accept Trump’s application for a restraining order from disclosing records to the select committee.

A Trump spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment on the ruling.
