In collaboration with Illumination and Nintendo, Truff has released a series of Super Mario Bros. movie hot sauce. With a total of three different hot sauces available in the collection, these condiments appear in bottles inspired by notable characters in the series. Super Mario Bros. series, this is Mario, Peach and Toad. Each hot sauce is soaked with truffles, which goes with the fact that mushrooms are synonymous with mario Franchising. However, collaborative products, especially food products, can succeed or fail, and these pungent sauces may not be for everyone.
This is my first time reviewing a food product, but for sure I enjoyed eating. In addition to writing and reviewing games, I enjoy going to local restaurants and trying new foods, seasonal foods, and barbecues with friends. So, naturally, I jumped on the offer to try these hot sauces.
The packaging of the Truff collaboration sauces themselves is great, each in a slightly grainy labelled glass bottle imprinted with a specific sauce. Super Mario Bros. character. There is even gold inlaying some of the printed text, trying to convince consumers of the general quality of the product itself. It doesn’t feel cheap or like it was made without thought. It’s clear that both Illumination and Nintendo wanted to create an outstanding collaborative project to celebrate the film’s release.
And they did exactly that. The sauce itself is quite thick and has a pungent taste due to the addition of truffles. Of the three, Hot White Peach Sauce – soaked with white truffles – has the least amount of heat, but is the sweetest of the three. Finally, I cooked up a chicken breast, incorporating hot sauce into the process to try and infuse some of its flavor into the meat. The end result was quite interesting, as the chicken ended up carrying some notes of hot sauce after it was fully cooked. It lacks the original sweetness from the sauce when used as a condiment, but still carries a bit of heat.
I do the same with Toad Original Hot Sauce, a black truffle dipping sauce that has a more chipotle smell and flavor. The chicken appears roughly the same and has the same heat intensity. In general, this sauce is more suitable for cooking with Peach sauce due to its more earthy smell and taste due to the incorporation of black truffles.
On the other hand, Mario Hotter Hot Sauce, I chose to use specifically as a condiment. The hottest of the three, probably the sauce that tasted the best. In my opinion, this is because the heat helps to remove some of the more pungent flavors of the truffles. As you can probably gather at this point, if you don’t like truffles, this may not be for you. That’s the conclusion I came to after eating Mario sauce with fried chicken and fries. Due to the combination with black truffles, it’s hard to find something to pair with it.
Overall, none of the sauces has a real consistency when heated and more or less accentuates the use of a trendy, expensive ingredient – truffles. This makes sense, based on collaboration and because anything too hot may not fit the palette of such a huge consumer base. These are good, and good enough on their own. But perhaps could have been hotter and could have combined other ingredients with truffles to create a better and more varied sauce portfolio for the collaboration.
That said, the packaging is of high quality and the box itself are great collectibles. I would recommend this sauce to anyone I know. Sure is not. Mainly due to the lack of any real intense heat and the overwhelming truffle flavor. But if you can’t get enough of the truffles, then you’ll probably really enjoy these sauces beyond being a co-op item associated with one of the biggest video game franchises in the world.
