A Major League Soccer player is accused of making racist comments during a game on Saturday night and the league is investigating.
The San Jose Earthquakes vs New York Red Bulls game was stopped after a player said he heard an opponent use racist language on the field.
“Racist remarks were made. I don’t believe it was with me,” earthquake-forward Jeremy Ebobisse said in press conference after the game without naming other players.
“It’s also important to note that race, language, symbols can’t be thrown in any direction – whether it’s against Black players or not – because that will open any doors on its own. ,” Ebobisse added.
MLS said in a statement that it will launch an investigation into the incident and that the union has “zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language and takes these allegations seriously.”
The Red Bulls echo that sentiment and said the club will cooperate with the league’s investigation.
Earthquakes head coach Luchi Gonzalez later said he had urged Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber to remove the player who allegedly made racist remarks from the game.
“I certainly have strongly advised players not to play anymore,” Gonzalez said. “I know it’s an accusation, but I trust my players. I trust my players. If they say something, they are human beings with high morals in front of professional footballers. career, so I believe it’s true.”
The last match ended in a 1-1 draw.
