Toyota Camry 2025 hybrid blends into the background

Once again, Toyota has doubled the number of hybrid vehicles.

As the automaker moves toward electrifying its entire lineup, the update Camry 2025 The hybrid car line tells the story of Toyota’s current strategy: powerful (enough), practical, efficient and cost-effective. These are the outstanding features of the 2025 Camry product line.

After spending a short amount of time behind the wheel of the base LE model and the sportier XSE, it’s clear that the Camry is probably in no danger of losing its spot as America’s best-selling car for the time being. next time. This is despite the fact that the Koreans, both Hyundai and Kia, just refreshed their midsize models, the Sonata and K5.

Here’s what I’ve noted and what we look forward to testing further in the real world with more time behind the wheel.

Toyota Camry 2025 brings smooth steps

V-6 is dead. The Camry was a support and it was no longer standing on that hill.

Every 2025 Camry has a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with 184 horsepower. The gasoline engine is paired with a fifth-generation version of Toyota’s planetary gear hybrid system called the THS 5. It uses two electric motors and produces 225 horsepower sent to the front wheels. . Toyota offers a third motor mounted on the rear axle for all-wheel drive, and it can be optioned on every trim for $1,525. All-wheel drive models increase net system output to 232 horsepower.

Both the more comfort-oriented LE model and the sportier XSE model deliver similar power, with some of the best electric power delivery in the industry. Toyota has nailed the combination of the two power sources. Camry never causes vibrations, jerks or even any disturbance to the occupants. Despite being down on power compared to the old V-6 model, the hybrid’s electric motor produces torque that’s immediately off the line, giving the Camry enough to pull away from stop signs.

On the highway, the hybrid powertrain seems to have no shortage of ideas when it comes to passing another car traveling at 70 mph, but this never happens. Lucid Air Sapphire or. Don’t plan on racing anything other than a Corolla for the pink slip.

The steering is well weighted and the Camry cruises smoothly on California highways. I was surprised and delighted that my expectations of excessively light steering were not met. Feedback from the steering is taut – this is a Camry, not a Supra, after all – but it doesn’t feel completely detached from the road.

The base LE’s softer suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels provide a comfortable, almost controlled luxury ride. The XSE with sportier tuning and 19-inch wheels rides noticeably firmer with more seams and bumps transmitted into the cabin, but even the sportier trim is compliant and comfortable at speed . I’ll have to see how the sportier XSE fares on broken Midwest pavement.

Theoretically, the 2025 Toyota Camry will consume fuel

Toyota says that in its most efficient form, which is the front-wheel-drive LE version, the Camry is expected to have fuel economy of 53 mpg city, 50 highway, 51 combined.

The least efficient Camry will be the XSE model with all-wheel drive that gets fuel economy of 44/43/44 mpg. Still effective.

In our pre-production car with only a few hundred miles on it (meaning the engine and gaskets weren’t even broken yet), the trip computer showed an average of 35.3 mpg. The driving route includes mixed steady-state speedless driving with many elevation changes over the course of nearly 50 miles. I’m looking forward to testing a tuned production car to see how it achieves fuel economy in real life.

Toyota Camry 2025 looks similar but different

It takes a true Camry enthusiast, if such a thing exists, to spot the updated 2025 model. Toyota says it’s new but it’s not. The car rides on the same chassis with a 111.2-inch wheelbase as before. The hard points of the body also do not move. Overall length has increased by about 1.4 inches, but that’s due to the new bumper design. The busy X-wing fighter UI is gone. It was replaced by a simpler, more subdued look with a wide lower grille with different inserts for different body styles. Out back, wraparound LED taillights could be found on any car, and the roofline wouldn’t be out of place on Honda Accords or Hyundai Sonatas.

Inside the story continues with a more peaceful interiority. The dashboard still has an asymmetrical design, with actual buttons and knobs for the climate and audio systems. Thank you Toyota.

Base cars come with a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster and an 8.0-inch touchscreen, but upper trim models get dual 12.3-inch displays. The touchscreen has the same interface regardless of size, and it causes some minor problems for both. The smaller 8.0-inch screen doesn’t actually feel like an 8.0-inch screen because Toyota’s interface uses the left side to lock the soft buttons on the left rail, thereby shrinking the screen area can use. The 12.3-inch touchscreen is too much as it doesn’t have split-screen capability. Hope you enjoy lots of Apple CarPlay or a massive map. Yes, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Base cars have comfortable cloth seats, possibly the best in the lineup. But the passenger side doesn’t get adjustable lumbar support until you step up to the higher LE and XLE trims. The rear seats have plenty of leg, knee and legroom, but headroom is tight. People 6 feet tall or taller will be aware of how the head feels. Cutting the door is not worthy of Uber. The rear seat may be more comfortable than the Accord because the independent headrests aren’t integrated into the seatback, but there’s less legroom, the door opening is smaller, and it’s more difficult to get in and out. Even so, I feel like I don’t sit as low in the backseat of the Camry as I do in the Accord.

Every LE and Something resembling suede adorns the dashboard and doors. The sportier XSE model I drove ditched the cloth trim on the doors and dashboard in favor of red synthetic leather trim. It’s bright. Upper trim models have soft-touch roofs but hard plastic rear doors. The car’s legs are covered with hard plastic. Unfortunately, every Camry has a shiny piano black trim on the dashboard that surrounds the touchscreen, which then spills toward the passenger door. The plastic ripples and looks cheap, especially in the sun. At least it’s not on the center console where it would get scratched.

The 2025 Toyota Camry checks the value box

The base front-wheel drive 2025 Camry LE is priced at $29,495 including a $1,095 destination charge. That price is about $16,000 less than the average transaction price of a new car. It’s a clear deal. Adding all-wheel drive costs just $1,525 more for solid driving in poor weather. A full tilt sport XSE with all-wheel drive will cost $37,220.

Apples to apples, Camry latest discounts Hyundai Sonata adds $2,455 while getting more horsepower and better fuel economy in some tests.

It’s not interesting; Driving is not fun at all; but the 2025 Camry, which is fully hybrid, now offers comfortable, unobtrusive and fuel-efficient transportation. And you can get four-wheel drive to boot. It may seem at first blush that if shopping for value and performance, the Camry is ahead of the segment.
