The producers of the Tony Awards issued a “strict no-violence policy” after actor Will Smith’s slap.
“In the event of an incident, the perpetrator will be immediately removed from the event,” reads an excerpt of the letter released by the producers.
The new rule comes weeks after Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Smith won an Oscar but was later banned from the Academy for 10 years.
“The Board has determined, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, either in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” wrote AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson.
Smith has resigned.
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexplicable. The list of people I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all present and the global audience back home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I have deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their extraordinary work. I’m hurt. I want to focus back on those who deserve attention for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. ”
