Trainer Librado Barocio brought home the first placing stakes winner of his career when Intuitive placed first in the May 5 Senorita Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park.
The girl of my dreams took the early lead on Santa Anita’s hillside turf, while jockey Edwin Maldonado was content to let the 17-1 Visually race in fifth place. He moved her up to second as the field approached the dirt track that intersected the main turf course. That helped Tuong continue to thrive in the stretch and score a 1:12.91 over about 6 1/2 lengths. mischief finished second, half a length ahead of the favourites Laulne .
Intuitive broke her maiden in her last start at 2 last year. In her first outing as a 3-year-old, she finished fourth in the February 1 Sweet Life Stakes and was moved up to third after being disqualified. Visual then struggled, finishing fifth in the March 10 China Doll Stakes and finishing fourth in the March 24 allowance/option claiming race.
“That filly just started training really well after her last race,” Barocio said.
Barocio is having a good season going into 2024. He has been a back-to-back share of the California bred team Johnny Podres , a gelding he owns with David Bernsen. Barocio, who races his own horses under the Mia Familia Racing Stable banner, trains Intuitive for California Racing Partners, Ciaglia Racing, Fick Brothers Racing, Dario Bernardi and George Monty.
California Racing Partners purchased Intuitive for $20,000 at the 2023 Ocala Breeders’ 2-year-old spring sale. Barocio credits Larry Zapp with the selection of the 3-year-old daughter of drag .
