Tightening the law for foreign cars to buy RON95 gasoline instead of subsidized gas stations – The Government does not urge

Groups in Johor Baru are calling on the Malaysian government to strengthen enforcement of existing laws to curb the illegal sale of RON95 gasoline, instead of introducing new policies, Star reported.

Johor Baru Low Kueck Shin, president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said introducing new programs with unclear mechanisms would be “troublesome” and could confuse the public.

“People in southern Johor, especially Johor Baru, are told that foreign registered vehicles are not allowed to pump RON95 petrol, which is subsidized by the government for Malaysians. Foreign registered vehicles including those from Singapore can only buy petrol like RON97,” Mr. Low said.

“We found it unnecessary to set up a non-subsidized RON95 gas station. It is better for government agencies to step up law enforcement to catch people who break the law by buying subsidized fuel,” Low continued, adding that legislation on the matter has already been introduced. for many years and gas station operators, kiosk workers and even consumers are alert and cautious about this.

According to Malaysia Tour Guides Council Chairman Jimmy Leong, the government’s proposal for the establishment of unsubsidized petrol stations will have only minimal impact on the tourism industry in Johor.

“Tourists drive to Johor for pleasure and gas pumping is only a small part of their trip; they usually fill up the tank before heading back to Singapore at night,” Leong said. Foreign-registered vehicles have repeatedly spread about filling with RON95 gasoline, while by law, foreign-registered vehicles are only allowed to use RON97 gasoline.
