Tiger Woods’ score: 79 career worst PGA Championship, marks fifth highest scoring round ever
It started with a clutch save, but that equates to the third round Tiger Wood will get at the 2022 PGA Championship. Ultimately signing 9 to 79, the 15 major champion times collapsed midway through his round and failed to gain any momentum around the Southern Hills on Saturday.
After scoring a respectable 1 through his first five holes, Woods seemed ready to weather the cold and windy conditions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, despite others on the field struggling. However, that will all change soon.
A club miss on Friday’s par-3 tee was the beginning of the end as the 46-year-old’s golf ball found its way into the penalty area; he ended up mining for three bogeys. Mistakes started there that Woods made a trick on six of his next seven holes.
“I couldn’t get off the train there or the other train,” Woods said. “Like I said, I just didn’t – I didn’t do anything right. I didn’t hit many good shots. So I ended up with a pretty good score.”
Tiger is in danger of posting the worst score of his major championship career; However, as he has done in every competitive golf game this year, Tiger continues to fight no matter the circumstances.
A long-range birdie on the 15th round par-4 put Woods nine points ahead of his inning and 12 more points to the championship. Playing in the last five holes over 1 under, he avoided an entry into the dreaded “80s club” as he had only done twice before in his major championship career.
Woods’ score of 9 out of 79 would be the third-worst round of his main career and the fifth-worst of his professional career.
Tiger is currently tied at 76th with just one name below him on the leaderboard. He’ll be on the field early Sunday morning in one of the first groups of the finals, but you better believe Woods will still fight to the end.
