Tiger Woods recovery update: Golfer posts first video of him hitting the ball since car accident

Tiger Woods has taken a huge step forward in his recovery from an injury he sustained in a car crash at the end of February.

The veteran golfer posted a video to his Twitter account on Sunday morning, which shows him swinging into golf balls. It marks the first time since the Masters in November 2020 that golf fans have seen him on a course.

This progression seems to indicate that Woods may in fact have a chance to play golf again. His return to sport is not guaranteed after the car crash.

THAN: Latest news on Tiger Woods’ recovery

Woods, 45, has had a long way to go to recovery. He had his fifth back surgery in late December 2020 before being involved in a car crash two months later.

Woods suffered serious injuries to his right shin, including multiple fractures, including a punctured skin. Woods’s Twitter account provided an update on his condition following the accident.

Mr Woods suffered a serious orthopedic injury to his lower right limb and was treated by orthopedic specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, during emergency surgery. A palliative open fracture affecting both the upper and lower parts of the tibia and fibula was stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the metatarsal and ankle bones were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Injuries to the muscles and soft tissues of the leg require surgical release of the muscle sheath to relieve pressure from swelling.

And Dr Robert Glatter, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, thinks it will be a long way back for Woods – if he ever gets back on course.

“Can he come back after this? It’s not clear at the moment,” Glatter told USA Today. “We don’t know. But it’s going to be a long recovery and it’s going to be painful. We can assume he’ll have to go through bumps and toss.

“It’s really unclear. But at least he has life right now.”

But now, Woods is back on the pitch. And while his likely return to competitive action may not be close, he is, at least, “making progress,” as he noted in the post.
