This is why you should never use an LCD monitor to create landscape and portrait shots

Using the LCD monitor to compose photos has become very popular in the age of mirrorless cameras. Keeping the camera away from your face is handy when shooting subjects from hard-to-reach angles. In some ways, I consider this a great advantage a mirrorless camera has over a DSLR, but in my latest video I give three reasons why I never use it. LCD monitor to create head and portrait shots.

I attended a photography course last week and had the good fortune to be behind the lights of many of my colleagues. One thing I noticed immediately was that many photographers were pointing me at eye level without looking directly at the camera’s EVF. I find myself looking at them instead of looking down at their lenses, so in the photos I look like I’m staring into space somewhere. Of course, this is not good for a head shot because the purpose of a head shot is to attract the viewer and the key to this is eye contact.

There are other reasons I recommend going “old school” and using the EVF to compose your shots, some tried and true methods, such as the simple fact of holding the camera to your face. you will create more stability. But, before I get labeled as just another teacher, I’ll go ahead and spoil the ending by telling you that there are some cases where I go against my own advice and use LCD screen for composing. I hope you’ll enjoy the video and I’d love to hear your own hands-on methods for creating photos with a mirrorless camera.
