Ricoh announces compact waterproof and shockproof WG-80

Ricoh has announced its latest rugged compact camera, WG-80. Like its predecessors, the new model builds on a 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor and a 28–140mm (full-frame equivalent) f/3.5–5.5 lens. As before, the camera’s video capabilities max out at 1080/30p video, and the rear LCD is also a similar 2.7-inch 230K-dot LCD.

The main innovation that distinguishes the WG-80 from its predecessor, the WG-70, is the ring light for macros, whose six LEDs now double the wattage. Unfortunately, the camera’s “solid” credentials aren’t as advanced: While the WG-80 has a free window down to 14ºF (–10ºC) and can survive drops up to 5 feet (1.6m), it’s waterproof to 46 feet (14 minutes) for just 2 hours!

Available in black or orange, the Ricoh WG-80 can be purchased for $330 from mid-June.

The RICOH WG-80 has its own built-in ring light with adjustable illumination levels. Six macro LEDs arranged around the perimeter of the lens provide twice the illumination intensity of its predecessor, the WG-70, making the camera ideal for macro and low-light photography, for allows extreme close-ups of coral while snorkeling as well as detailed shots of small parts and components on job sites. The ring light can also be activated for selfies with the help of the self-portrait assist mode.

For underwater photos and videos, the RICOH WG-80’s enhanced underwater modes deliver sharp, realistic images by enhancing red hues often lost in underwater photography, while compensating Effectively the loss of contrast due to light diffusion in water. The camera is waterproof to a depth of 46 feet (14 meters) for up to two hours of continuous operation.

The RICOH WG-80 is equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with approximately 16 effective megapixels and a high-performance imaging engine that provides ultra-high-resolution still images and HD video clips. It features triple anti-shake protection to avoid blurry images and videos in all applications.

The RICOH WG-80’s sturdy construction makes it ideal for photography and video recording in all sorts of difficult conditions. It is impact resistant to drops from a height of five feet (1.6 meters) and freezeproof at temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C). It is also equipped with an outdoor-friendly LCD monitor with brightness levels that can be instantly adjusted according to the lighting levels of the shooting situation.

Pricing and Availability

Available in black or orange, the RICOH WG-80 will be available mid-June 2022 at www.us.ricoh-imaging.com as well as at Ricoh Imaging authorized retail stores nationwide at retail prices. Manufacturer’s output is $329.95.

  1. Heavy-duty construction ensures underwater shooting to a depth of 14 meters (46 feet), for up to two hours
The WG-80’s rugged, airtight body is not only waterproof to a depth of 14 meters (46 feet) for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX 8 or JIS Class 8), but also impact resistance when falling. from a height of 1.6 meters (five feet), * dustproof (equivalent to IPX 6 or JIS Class 6), anti-freeze at low temperatures to -10°C and impact resistant up to 100kgf ( kg force). ** Thanks to this heavy-duty construction, the camera performs superbly and reliably even in harsh, demanding outdoor conditions. *Measured according to the original RICOH IMAGING test standard – from a height of 1.6 meters, on a 5 cm thick plywood surface – in accordance with MIL-810F Standard Method 516.5-Shock Resistance. **Measured according to original RICOH IMAGING test standard.

  1. Exceptional picture quality
The WG-80 is equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which ensures excellent low-noise and high-sensitivity characteristics and high-speed reading of image data signals. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine, this image sensor delivers class-leading light sensitivities of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with approximately 16 effective megapixels. This model also offers advanced image processing functions, made possible by the latest in super-resolution technology, to ensure sharp, clear, high-resolution images. It even offers innovative features like a handheld Night Shot mode, which automatically captures several images of the same night scene and creates a single, blur-free composite image from them.

  2. Six Macro lights to assist with close-ups, with various functions
Ideally positioned around the perimeter of the lens for macro photography, the six Macro LEDs allow the WG-80 to provide even and bright illumination of the subject when Digital Microscope mode is selected. Offering almost twice the maximum illumination intensity of its predecessor and a five-step intensity adjustment function, this six-pack allows photographers to easily optimize short-range flash photography based on on the object or creative intent. To minimize camera shake and subject shake, the Instant Illumination Enhancer function enables the use of higher shutter speeds by automatically increasing the discharge of the Macro Lamp at the time the shutter is released. The Macro Light also offers other useful functions, such as Auto Portrait Assist mode, which uses LED blinking to check that the subject’s face has been safely captured within the frame. no and LED mode, use the Macro Light as a lighting device in the dark.

  3. Underwater shooting mode
Designed specifically for underwater photography, the Underwater and Underwater Movie shooting modes are programmed to optimize color and contrast, based on data from images taken underwater. These modes deliver sharp, true-to-life images by enhancing red tones lost in underwater photography, while effectively compensating for the loss of contrast caused by light diffusion in the water. In Underwater mode, the Flash Off + Flash On option allows the user to take two consecutive photos with a single shutter release – one without the flash and the other with the flash.

  4. 5X optical zoom lens with 28mm . wide-angle coverage
The WG-80 features a high-performance 5x optical zoom lens with a focal length range of 5mm to 25mm (approximately 28mm to 140mm in the 35mm format) to suit a wide range of scenes and subjects, including sweeping landscapes. . It also offers other convenient photography functions, such as a macro mode for capturing dramatic close-ups from a minimum focusing distance of one centimeter; Smart Zoom function to extend the zoom range to approximately 36x (equivalent to 1008mm in 35mm format) without sacrificing image quality, for outstanding telephoto photography; and a burst shooting mode, useful for fixed point observations.

  5. Full HD movie recording for lasting high-quality movie recording
The WG-80 offers Full HD movie recording using the H.264 recording format. Users can shoot high-quality, expansive footage (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio) at a frame rate of 30fps. To add some creative touches to movie shooting, it also features a high-speed camera function*** for slow-motion playback of recorded movies, and an interval movie function. A micro-HDMI (Type D) port is also provided on the body for simultaneous output of Full HD movies and audio to external audio-visual devices. When this function is selected, the recording size is fixed at 1280 x 720 pixels

  1. Triple anti-shake protection to avoid blurry images in all apps

    1. Pixel Track SR . Mechanism
When recording still images, this advanced shake reduction mechanism effectively compensates for camera shake by digitally processing the affected images.

    2. Digital SR mode
When the camera detects low-light conditions when shooting still images, this mode automatically increases light sensitivity up to ISO 6400, making it possible to use faster shutter speeds and effectively reduce the impact of any disturbances. benefits of camera shake and subject shake when dealing with poor lighting conditions.

    3. Movie SR mode
During movie recording, this mode effectively compensates for image distortion caused by camera shake through the use of proprietary software to produce beautiful, blur-free movies.

  2. 2.7-inch LCD monitor with Outdoor View Settings
The WG-80 is equipped with a 2.7-inch LCD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio that expands horizontally and approximately 230,000 pixels. The display’s AR (Anti-Reflective) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections to ensure sharp, clear on-screen images even in the intense sunlight commonly encountered when shooting outdoors.
