The US power grid needs fossil fuels, not wind – speeding up with that?

Just to follow up with yesterday’s post on the Texas grid, here are two charts for the entire US.

The first part shows how total demand grew by more than 100GW during the cold snap just before Christmas.

The second part illustrates how wind power is halved over a 24-hour period at the same time:

This destroys the idea that the wind is always blowing somewhere and that all you have to do is distribute excess electricity across the country to meet demand.

And without gas or some other maneuverable source, how will that loss of wind power and increased demand be met?
