The top cities to land a six-figure hybrid job

Even as more employees worked in offices more than a year ago, hybrid work that allows them to work from home at least part of the time is still mainstream.

More than half of those with remote work are expected to work in a hybrid form by the end of the year, according to Gallupand online searches for combined jobs grew 130% last year, according to the IT recruitment firm Frank Recruitment Team.

As far as being able to work from home, at least for the time being, and getting paid well, some big tech hubs still lead the way. More than a quarter of jobs combined in San Francisco and Seattle pay more than $100,000 per year, according to a report from SimpleTexting, a text message marketing service.

The analysis looks at the 100 most populous US cities and the combined number of job openings, according to LinkedIn listings, in the city’s job market. The analysts then applied a filter to determine the combined share of jobs paying $100,000 per year or more in each city.

The top cities where hybrid workers earn $100,000 per year or more include:

  1. San Francisco: 27% of combined jobs pay six figures
  2. Seattle: 26% of combined jobs pay six figures
  3. Los Angeles: 14% of combined jobs pay six figures
  4. Austin, Texas: 13% of combined jobs pay six figures
  5. New York City: 12% of combined jobs pay six figures
  6. Tucson, Arizona: 11% of combined jobs that pay six figures
  7. Detroit: 10% of combined jobs pay six figures
  8. Boston: 10% of combined jobs pay six figures
  9. City of San Diego: 10% of combined jobs pay six figures
  10. Chicago: 10% of combined jobs pay six figures

It makes sense that tech hubs and big cities with sky-high rents top the list, although the best cities for six-figure hybrid jobs aren’t concentrated in the coastal regions.

For example, Austin, Texas, has been growing as businesses (including technology companies) flocked to the rising city to tap young demographics, find cheaper real estate and enjoy a low tax burden.

Corporations have also been eyeing Tucson, Arizona, as a good place to expand, bringing high-paying and eco-friendly jobs to the region. And even in Detroit, where the median household income is about $32,000 per year, 10% of the combined jobs available cross the six-figure mark.

Some job markets offer more work-from-home opportunities than others. The top cities to find a matching job in general include:

  1. Atlanta: 710 combined job opportunities per 100,000 people
  2. Boston: 547 combined job opportunities per 100,000 people
  3. Washington DC: 349 combined job opportunities per 100,000 people
  4. San Francisco: 310 combined job opportunities per 100,000 people
  5. Seattle: 294 combined job opportunities per 100,000 people

Workplace experts say enabling hybrid and remote work can help businesses recruit from a more diverse pool of talent and prevent people from quitting. Employees say flexibility helps them feel more connected, more productive, and balance their home and work lives.

“We have certainly seen a tipping point towards deeper and longer-lasting integration between remote and hybrid work into organizations,” said Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs. “. told CNBC Make It in Septemberand she expects hybrid arrangements to become the “workplace standard” in the future.
