The girly girl, or girls as we now call her, showed up on our doorstep one afternoon. It’s February in North Dakota, so it’s still very cold at night. She is pregnant and has lost both ends of her ears due to frostbite. My wife and I started putting food and water under the trailer, where it was dry.
After putting her children in a safe place, because we looked and couldn’t find them, she started showing up at our back door twice a day. In fact, she knows what time I go to work in the morning and will be waiting for me when I leave the house to be fed and cuddled.
One night, I heard noises outside from other cats in our fenced yard. When I went looking, Girls brought us a baby. So very small and walkable only. I picked up the kitten and brought it inside. It had an eye infection, so I started cleaning it when I heard more noise outside.
In a few hours, Girls brought us a total of seven kittens. We prepared an empty bedroom for them, as it was a weekend and we couldn’t make it to the shelter/veterinarian that we use for our cats.
First thing, Monday morning, we brought them in, and over the course of a few months they were taken care of by the wonderful staff and all the kittens found loving homes. Not long after, my wife and I came back to adopt the baby girl. The doctor estimated her age at 2 years old, too young to go through too much.
Today three years later, she is a happy and healthy loving cat who will never go without food and fresh water and will never have to survive a winter outside. out in North Dakota.
