The stakes are higher as Murphy gets ready for his return
Racing Post photographer Edward Whitaker caught sight of former equestrian champion Oisin Murphy earlier this week as he was about to return to racing after a lengthy ban.
The last time I photographed Oisin Murphy riding a horse was his spectacular victory over Princess Lorraine in Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar in November 2021. He won a great battle for the British Equestrian Championship, beating his weight room rival William Buick on his final day at Ascot, but The champion was banned for 14 months after breaking alcohol and lying to the BHA about breaking COVID-19 protocols.
A natural-born horseman, Murphy developed an interest in diving as a child. So much so that he recently represented Ireland on the Sunshine Tour dance series in Spain, where he won a place.
His girlfriend, Lizzie Nielsen, daughter of Stradivarius Bjorn, his owner/breeder, stood by and supported him throughout his rehabilitation, which he committed to doing the day after his failure. during a pre-race breath test at Newmarket on October 8, 2021.
He is ready to restart his career and fight to regain his championship.
